Zen Dharmaratne -35 the ranked rookie in fastest growing Professional tour .Shive Das managing editor of Golf Malaysia writes on the rookie Zen
Aiming (really) high.
Zen Dharmaratne -22 turned pro on his first attempt this year Feb having Qualified in PGM tour Q school with a horrible start missing cuts in the first few events Probably due to different condition from where he spend bulk of his time needling with the rudiments of the Golf the Royal Colombo Golf Club. Early missed cuts did not deter the rookie but bounce since then to make the cuts and earning a ranking around 35 th in the tour.
“My aim is to be Malaysian No 1 European No 1”He seems to be getting too far ahead of himself but he brings himself down to earth by admitting that it is not going to happen overnight. It’s going to be long hard haul. He says aiming that high means he will not seetle for the second best if he can help it. At least then even if he could end up at top 10, top20 oreen top 100 where rewards can still make the effort worth while. “ I am still young and have a few years to find my game. Despite my poor start I feel my game is coming together. I have started making cuts, I want to make top 10 on the PGM Tour at least, because then I know I can make it on the Asian Tour.
I have realized that I have to be completely ready, be committed, before playing every shot. He agreed this was where a good pre-shot routine comes in. As an amateur I could get away by not being 100% committed but not anymore. Zen found there were many things he could take away from the recent talk by the mind guru organized the day before the PGM I&P tournament at Kinrara Golf Club. If body language and confident articulation of what he wants to do are also criteria for player assessment, he can be counted on to let his club do the talking in the tournaments to come.
On Fastest growing professional tour: the Malaysian Professional Golf Tour.
This was revealed by the Asian Tour chief to the founder of the tournament Tun Ahmad Sarji…
Just in the recent past as near as 2009, Malaysia did not have a tour in Malaysia for professional golfers. Today they have a tour that boasts 22 events for the year with a prize money of 4 million ringgit. This year the Asian Tour came forward recognizing the importance of PGM Tour - offered to be part of them. Include Asian Development Tour events, seven of the them on the very first year, giving the Malaysians an opportunity for an easy entrance to the Asian Tour by playing well. Further participants of the ADT events earn world ranking points. This system gave the opportunity for Nicolas Fung to lead the Malaysian pack in the world ranking at around 440 th . or so Winner of an ADT event earn six points
Growth is not stopping nor will it stop till Tun Sarji is able to breath, as he said during the recent presentation as part of his answer to the question on the need of a venue for golfers to practice. He said he will try to get a home course for the PGM tour if he continues to live to do so.
Even more recognition.
The historical event of EuroAsia cup will be organized by the PGM tour. Malaysia will host the event in March 2014 at KLGCC. This is fine recognition by the European Tour who initiated this event and endorsed the PGM Tour as the organizing body for the historical event. Where top ASIAN TOUR PLAYERS WILL PLAY AGAINST THE BEST OF European Tour players. Along the same line as the famous RYDER CUP.
This infant 3-year old PGM tour has shown more matured traits. A few examples:
Marching on like a grown up without any interruption to events-,, held as scheduled since inaugural year 2010 and still counting the number of events for the year giving all Malaysians Pros the opportunity to enter the tour with satellite tours conducted in all states.
Unlike a three year old infant, the PGM tour is brushing shoulders with other top professional tours in the world. The Asian Tour was the first to recognize and later the European Tour who is working with PGM on the EuroAsia cup.
Tun Sarji had a vision when he initiated the tour in 2010. That is the 2016 Olympics. For the first time, golf will be included as an event in the Olympic Games. The only way for Malaysians to qualify is by climbing up the ladder of world ranking points. With the PGM Tour currently in full swing, all Malaysian pros now have a chance to prove they are worthy of participating in Olympics.
Judging from past results, Malaysian players have been improving steadily, and are winning ADT events. Before Tun Sarji, winning ADT EVENTS WAS A FAR CRY. Tun Sarji believes this is due to exposure and the resulting keen competition the players now face with top ADT players from other countries.
2014 will be a boost for PGM tour players with more prize money and earning the title of the Fastest growing professional tour in the world in terms of prize money. At the end of this year, the PGM Tour Player’s Championship to be held in December will give the winner the opportunity to play the Malaysian Open 2014, the oldest premier professional golfing event of the country, which is sanctioned by the Asian Tour and co-sanctioned by the European Tour. Prize money will probably exceed US 4 million.
Malaysian players must now be thankful to the founder who worked hard to make this event from nothing to reality, and then making it very successful within a short span of 3 years. Before this, just recollect the memories of Malaysian pros…
The PGM founder called all parties to support the tour more sponsors and wider media coverage to make the national event even more successful. Tun Ahmad Sarji shows plenty of passion to the game he is seen keenly witness all major golf tournaments and most PGM tournament. He is present whenever he is needed for that final motivation to propel the tournament to greater heights
Zen Dharmaratne the first pro of Royal Colombo Golf Club
For over 130 years Royal Colombo Golf Club was the cradle for Sri Lankan golfers to play , practice and advance their game of golf .But All top golfer from Sri Lanka came from the periphery of the club.
Of the gentlemen members @RCGC Zen was the first to elevate to professional stage at the age of 22. Accompanied with degree in IT, Balancing academics(brain) and sports (brawn)to better human faculties. After all it is the mind that get the ball to target Body is only an obedient servant to the commands coming from the mind..
Sri lanka can now boast an environment that is conducive to produce classy golfers. In the run up to being a professional golfer Zen made some historical performances during the year 2012 golf at Royal Colombo golf club winning Squadron cup and the aggregate gold medal with massive margin in scores. He won the Club championship in both club Nuwra Eliya and Colombo. His performance in Indian professional golf event held in Colombo winning the tile best amateur , made his father to re direct the son from collecting trophies to collecting the real thing in Golf -.Professional golf- So abandoning Zen to battle with tigers and lions in Golf. As a first step, attempt was made to qualify in Malaysian Professional golf circuit that has more than seven Asian development tour events and wide gates to Major events like the five Asian and European tour events with one PGA event. Top golfer like of Tiger Rory, Vijey, take part in these events. Prize money of all adds to more than 20 million US dollars for 2013, Excluding the major event the prize money of PGM tour only will be US 1.4 million for 2013. First step was indeed a hit on target.
Malaysia and the Asean nations though started the game later than Sri Lanka has advance to world standards when in comes to facilities in Golf, being able to host world class events with ease. Asia is booming in golf .Missions hills in China leads with prize money exceeding most major events in rest of the world,. From Asia we have seen top golfers coming likes Arjun Atwal Jeev,Vije Singhe, K J Choi , Ishikawa, and more
When in comes to golf Sri lanka cannot forget Nandasena Perera As a top amateur while Mithun Perea, Prbagaran ,Anura Rohana, Who rose from the periphery of RCGC membership and from ranks of caddies to be professionals. Zen is the first Gentleman- Member to acquire the tile of professional golf in its History of near 130 years.
From the ladies section of Royal Colombo golf club It was Thiru Fernando who first made the professional golf circuit .the daughter of the historically best amateur golfer of Royal Colombo golf club.
Asia is dominating the world in ladies golf. Koreans account for more than half the pack among the top 20.They do not boast big physical size of the Northern hemisphere golfers yet they make up for it with sheer skills. World number one a Korean NA Yoon Cheon is tiny and very Asian in manners. The former number one Tsani is quiet similar in stature. Then Why not Sri Lankan ladies??
While Asia is booming in Golf Sri lanka is not getting an ounce of Benefit from the Golfing wave ?? Do we have the basic facilities to host ,even at second level international event in golf. Answer is NO As the only course In Colombo lacks so many basics needed for an international event. Asian tour officials descried to Damaru response to an ADT event from Sri Lanka was not very positive While Bangladesh has now two ADT events.
Victoria in Kandy is better equipped for second level event but lack other supportive facilities like nearby Five star accommodation for player official and the golfing fans from all corner of the world. With 365 days of sunshine promoting golf as destination is indeed lucrative as the visitors are high end spenders The events generate world wide audience. Asian tour Official have made several attempts to get an event held in Colombo but failed. Bangladesh is hosting such events India is way ahead hosting some major events.
Zen while on the run for the run for the crown of professional golf has inspired many youngsters in Colombo. For in stance Saschin de silva , SafFar, Pushpa Kumar likes have potential to follow .
Wake up Sri Lanka .If the cricketers can do golfer too can . Sports authorities need to provide better facilities, like a public golf course.
well played @ this natural course , the experienced never before, birds, ponds, villagers, pond boys they are all with you while you --walking hitting the ball.Just like centuries ago in Scotland. No boundaries, no 100% exclusivity to the territory etc Play as it lies, the name of the game
